It seems almost impossible that it could be true. The idea that became Maine Outdoors has survived for 20 years. That first summer we offered only canoe trips on the Saint George River and it was one of the wettest on record. Not only did it reduce the number of folks that wanted to go for a canoe trip but I had promised Argy that we would go out to lunch every rainy day that I was not on the river. Not realizing that that there would be more rainy days without clients than sunny days with clients that summer. Needless to say it was not a profitable first year.

We usually have a pair of barred owls nesting in the woodlot next to the house but this year there seem to be more owls than usual around. Last evening I went out to exercise the dogs as it was just getting dark, when I opened the kennel gate the squeak caused an owl to holler and let everyone know that he was around. Because it was still pretty light I could make him out plainly in an oak tree about fifty yards away. We hear them frequently but this one was very plain to see. I ducked into the house and told Argy and the boys that they should come out and see this owl.

The ice is not completely out but it was a warm sunny morning with only a little wind and a crystal clear blue sky. The upper stretches of the Saint George are open to fishing year round and get a good stocking of brown trout in the fall. So I thought I would try my luck. The water level in the river is low for this time of year; after all of the rain last fall it feels very odd to say that it is dry. I was able to wade in places that are normally way too deep and fast at this time of year. The water temperature was cold and I was glad to have my neoprene waders on.
